it looks like scott ezell isn't being deported per se, but has still decided to leave taiwan. i can't say i blame him. this once again shows how outdated the labor laws are here in taiwan. i mean when someone can be deported for simply playing guitar for free, because it's considered "work"(and so in violation of visa/work permit regulations) you really have to wonder what's going on.
apparently, this case has at least one band made up of foreigners concerned. i can't imagine any small indie band going through all the paperwork involved just to play at some tiny pub. but aside from that, this bit at the end of the article:
Walking out, as a joke, I asked one final question: "I wanted to help my girlfriend paint her house this weekend. Is that legal?"
"You will need to apply for a separate permit for that," she said sighing.
just goes to show the lack of common sense inherent in the council of labor affairs. i wonder how long until blogging is considered "work" and hence terms for deportation?
