today i went to moca and saw their fiction love show. i've been pretty excited about this show as it features work by yoshitomo nara. what i didn't realize was that as part of the show they were re-creating his studio in what they are calling the taipei summer house. only 5 people were allowed in at one time, and you'd see his desks littered with scraps of paper and things he's created. he also has a bunch of cdr mixes he'd put together. i was happy to note the patti smith postcard pinned to the wall as well.
the rest of the show was also pretty cool. i really dug most of what i saw, there was even an s & m speed racer. in the screening room they were showing animated shorts. i must have misread the scheldule, because what they showed didn't seem to match what i thought they were going to show. one short was from beijing. something about buffaloes, but done in a style based on chinese pictograms. there was a russian short that was prefaced by a long list of awards the film had won. among them was some award called "best animation ever". whenever i see something called "best ever" i'm instantly prejudiced against it. this film was no exception. it was ok, but i found a great deal of it boring.
