yesterday i went to the women make waves festival and saw a series of shorts by tracey moffatt. i'd never heard of her before, but the description of the films sounded interesting. some of the films i dug quite a bit, but heaven went on for far too long. it also appears that some of the films were shot on film, but what we saw was not a projection from film but some form of tape projected. i've heard people complain about this sort of thing before and now i see why they do. some of the films appeared too dark, and the colour didn't seem quite right. i'm not sure if this was due to a poor projector or the source material. the last film they showed was a documentary about tracey moffatt which was very interesting. from this i gather she was a still photographer first. i think i prefer her still photography over her films though.
while waiting in line to go into the theater i met a foreigner from new zealand who was surprised to see another foreigner here, as most of the foreigners he's met have no interest in more challenging film work. i think i've made a new film friend.
